Foursquare ‘Special Nearby’

Monday, June 7th, 2010 by Craig Berry

foursquareAfter spending a week in New Orleans, I’m very happy to be back in the land of 10,000 Caribou Coffee Shops. Down in NOLA, you can only go to Cafe Du Monde so many times, and so you’re stuck going to that large national chain of coffee shops with the funky logo.

This morning I checked in on Foursquare at my favorite Caribou and saw a new feature, ‘Special Nearby.’ After clicking it, I was informed that after 10 check-ins I qualify for a $1 discount on a large coffee. YES! Location-based social networking is growing up.

Apparently, this feature has been around for a couple weeks, but I hadn’t stumbled upon it yet.

This should be a reminder to those businesses to start taking this movement seriously and develop a game plan.

Should businesses use Foursquare?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010 by Craig Berry

This blog post, ‘6 ways to optimize your business on Foursquare’, has some useful ideas and bolsters the argument that businesses SHOULD use Foursquare (or any of the other location-based social networks). I especially recommend #1 and #2…

#1 – Get Listed. This is a no-brainer. Any business owner, regardless of what they think about location-based networking, has to understand just how big this is getting. In one year, Foursquare has attracted 1,000,000 users. If you do nothing else, make sure you can be found on the Foursquare service. Seriously. It’ll take you 2 minutes — and you may already be on it.

#2 – ‘Offer Specials’. At one of my favorite coffee hangouts [HINT: It starts with a big C], they offer a $.10 discount for answering the daily trivia. 10 cents…big whoop right? But that small perk builds goodwill and over time, I am a more loyal customer. Hey coffee shops — how about $.10 off for folks who ‘check-in’ on Foursquare or Gowalla? If you made it $.25, I’d even have it post to my Facebook and Twitter account. That’s some cheap advertising in my book.

Sure, I understand that a lot of folks don’t quite get the location-based social networking thing, that’s fine – a bunch of other folks DID figure it out 40 million times.

Location-based networking: An overview

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 by Craig Berry

gowallaWith the proliferation of social networking and smartphones (many with GPS), ‘location networking’ has become a hot topic.

For the uninitiated, location networking is the use of smartphone apps to ‘check-in’ at the locations you visit. You then share this information with other social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook, or with ‘friends’ in the app. The current leaders in this arena are Foursquare and Gowalla. Google Buzz has some location-based features, but I won’t be discussing that one here.

In general they work like this…

  • After you register with the service, you download and launch the app. NOTE: Your phone will need GPS capabilities such as the iPhone or Droid.
  • After GPS pinpoints your location, you’ll be presented with a list of possible places to ‘check in’ at. If your location doesn’t exist yet, you can create a new one.
  • When checking-in, you’ll be given the option to include a message and to send it out via Twitter and/or Facebook. NOTE: You’ll need to setup this integration first on their websites.

Beyond that, the apps will differ. For example, in Foursquare, activities such as creating new spots and checking in will garner you points. If you are the point leader at a particular location, you get the ‘Mayor’ badge.

I won’t go into the full details of each, since I recommend trying out both. I’m leaning more towards using Gowalla exclusively, but I still like a few features better on Foursquare.

Many people wonder, ‘what’s the point?’ of using this kind of app. Well, they said the same thing about Twitter and Facebook my friends. ;)

Here are a couple potential uses…

  • A business can offer $$$ discounts for those checking in at their establishment, or maybe for the ‘mayor’ of a location.
  • Gowalla has a ‘Trips’ feature where you can create a collection of places for you to check in at. Maybe a tour of historic Churches? [H/T Fr. Nels Gjengdahl]
  • Foursquare has a ‘Tips’ feature so you can leave notes for other visitors of a location. Maybe you really liked a particular dish at a restaurant (or not so much).

It’s still in it’s infancy, so it’ll be interesting to see where this goes. How about you…have you used any of these apps? Have you discovered any special uses not mentioned?
